The Difference of a Classical Christian School
Choosing a school for your child can be one of the biggest decisions you will ever make.
As a parent, you recognize that your child’s school can leave a lasting impact on their life. You’re considering:
If you are on the search for a private Christian school in Northeast Houston, Texas, we are delighted that you are considering The Covenant Preparatory School.
Below, you’ll find answers to what makes a classical Christian school different, plus the many ways your child can thrive in our learning environment.
What Makes The Covenant Preparatory School Different?
Covenant implements a classical Christian curriculum. Classical Christian education is an exciting and engaging journey that leads students in the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Two main distinctives are that it aligns curriculum with students’ natural development and honors children’s holistic development. By giving our students opportunities to grow in mind, body, and spirit, they can be well-rounded individuals — ready to fulfill the calling God has placed in their hearts.
We emphasize truth, beauty, and goodness in the way we teach our students. Our goal is to help them to discover God’s world through a love of learning.
Classical education divides each student level into the three effective stages of learning:
- Grammar: At the elementary level, children memorize facts and supporting information, so they can get a strong grasp of core subjects.
- Logic: Middle school learning focuses on analysis of facts and things they have learned in elementary. At this stage, they are presented with various schools of thought to help them think logically.
- Rhetoric: High school students are equipped to work on persuasive expression through public speaking and writing. Students are prepared to think critically and communicate their point of view through events such as the Rhetoric/Senior Thesis every April — they choose their own topic and research, write, and prepare for their presentations.
Rooted in our Christian values, we also give many opportunities for your child to grow in their character. In second to seventh grade, students engage in an Ephesians Recitation, where they are encouraged to memorize and recite chapters from the book of Ephesians. It’s an amazing experience to see our students keep God’s Word in their minds and hearts throughout lower and middle school.
In addition to a God-centered curriculum, we include chapel, prayer time, and Bible lessons in our students’ schedule, helping them gain a deep understanding of how faith applies to their lives.
Covenant inspires students to become ambassadors of God’s love serving the world around them. We have an annual “Box of Love” program, where your child can help in providing school supplies and personal hygiene items for students in Guatemala.
We care about your child’s success! What are the ways you want your child to prepare for college and beyond? Our small class sizes (12:1 average student to teacher ratio) paves the way for differentiated instruction — equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for challenges in college and beyond. Covenant teachers serve as mentors, modeling discipline, kindness, and empathy towards others.
Christians were created to live in a community and that is important for the development and growth of our students. As a result, we stress community within Covenant through relationships with parents and staff, as well as community outside of Covenant with service partners and mission organizations.
Our clubs and enrichments foster a warm, nurturing community for your child. Aside from forming friendships in these groups, our students develop determination, strategy, and teamwork through our championship athletics.
Covenant holds an Annual Games Day where students engage in healthy competition within groups. The staff, parents, and other volunteers also get together in such events, bringing together a positive spirit of community in our school.
